Bethesda, Maryland is located approximately 16 miles (25 km) from Capitol Hill, Washington DC. It is a thriving urban district, brimming with nearly 200 restaurants, two live theatres, 20 art galleries, and some of the best shopping in the Washington, DC Metro Area. The district has ample parking, and is accessible by the Metro Red Line.

From award-winning theatre to independent films, downtown Bethesda’s Art and Entertainment District is filled with inspiring artists and art venues, like the Strathmore, Bethesda Blues and Jazz Club, and more. Unique galleries and public art fill the streets.

Climate

Maryland has a temperate climate, resulting in an average temperature of 73oF in the summer. It can become quite humid in June and rain can occur at any time so come prepared!

Shopping

Standard hours of operation for shops are Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, given the variability in store hours, it is advisable to check hours of operation for an establishment using the internet prior to making plans.

Getting Around Bethesda

For delegates utilizing public transportation, we encourage you to download the WMATA smartphone application to view the metro rail map and any service interruptions. You can also access the metro map and other information at https://www.wmata.com. You will need a SmartTrip® card to ride Metrorail. Fares on Metrobus can be paid by SmartTrip® or cash exact fare. SmartTrip® cards can be purchased from vending machines at all Metrorail stations as well as sales offices and some retail locations. The card cost is $2.00 and can be used repeatedly by adding fare as needed. You can purchase a card at a kiosk in Metrorail stations for $10 that includes $8 of stored fare value. To use the system, tap the SmartTrip® card as you enter the gates and again as you exit the station. Fares vary by time of day (rush or non-rush) and distance traveled. To travel the one stop between the Hyatt Regency Bethesda and NIH, fare is $1.75 or $2.15 depending on time of day. The fare for the three stops traveled between the EVEN Hotel Rockville and NIH is $2.15 or $2.70.
